I rip. I tear. I bleed. A liter of blood or a pound of flesh; which one causes more agony? I'll take both. I scream. I cry. I sit in silence and stare into nothingness. Do my tears change the consequences of my actions? No. I gather my things and prepare to leave. I look in the mirror. Who is that girl? No one I'd want to know. The fortress was set high on a cliff. Rocky ledges and steep paths that were little more than dirt riddled the top third of the outcropping that extended partway into the sea. Below this jagged line was a sheer drop into the ocean. The buildings themselves were made of stone, with either no doors at all or curtains draped across the jambs for at least a little privacy. The pathways between the buildings were either natural rock or sand, with gravel strewn all over. The surrounding cliffs were not as smooth as this one; there were plenty of natural formations of rock that would allow a person to climb across with relative ease and safety. Alto
